Android Pick Pockets Try to Empty Mobile Wallets
Three mobile trends come into play:
- 1. Mobile malware is skyrocketing! Security vendors agree it increased exponentially this year.
- 2. Cyber criminals are targeting Android devices more than any other because of the platform's openness. Google allows Android devices to download apps from anywhere, not just Google Play marketplace, making it easier for bad guys to corrupt devices.
- 3. People are increasingly using mobile devices for online payments, and even as a second token of authentication (SMS) in more secure payment interactions. Plus many vendors, including Google, are starting to launch Mobile Wallets, which use NFC and other technologies to turn your phone into an electronic credit card; allowing you to swipe it to make payments.
In 2013 we expect to see at least one vulnerability, even if just a proof-of-concept, that allows attackers to steal money from Android devices. Another factor to consider as you adopt BYOD policy in your organization.
