About FireCluster with XTM Model Upgrades
For some XTM device models, you can purchase a license key to upgrade the device to a higher model in the same product family for more performance and capacity.

For a FireCluster to successfully form, both members must be the same device model. If the second device you add to a FireCluster has a model upgrade, you must install the feature key with the model upgrade on that device before you add it to the cluster. This avoids a possible model mismatch error when the cluster first forms.
XTM 5 Series, 8 Series and 800 Series with a Model Upgrade
To prepare an XTM 5 Series, 8 Series, or 800 Series device with model upgrade to join a FireCluster:
- Use the Web Setup Wizard or Quick Setup Wizard to set up the XTM device with a basic configuration.
- Install the feature key that includes the model upgrade. For more information, see Get a Firebox Feature Key.
- Start the device in safe mode.
In safe mode, the XTM device is reset to factory-default settings, but the feature key is not removed.
After you install the feature key and start the XTM device in safe mode, it is ready to be added as the second member of the cluster. Use the standard procedure to configure the cluster on the other device and form the cluster. For more information, see Quick Start — Set Up a FireCluster.
XTM 2 Series with a Model Upgrade
XTM 25 and XTM 25-W support model upgrades and support FireCluster. Because you cannot start XTM 2 Series models in safe mode, you must use a different procedure to form the cluster if the feature key includes a model upgrade. After you create the cluster configuration in Policy Manager, save it to each cluster member individually. When you cable the two members together the cluster forms automatically.
To prepare an XTM 2 Series device with a model upgrade to join a FireCluster:
- Use the Web Setup Wizard or Quick Setup Wizard to set up the XTM device with a basic configuration.
- Install the feature key that includes the model upgrade. For more information, see Get a Firebox Feature Key.
Do not reset the device to factory-default settings, because this removes the feature key.
After you create the cluster configuration in Policy Manager, use this procedure to form the cluster.
- Use Policy Manager to enable and configure FireCluster on the first Firebox. To configure the FireCluster you must have the feature key for both cluster members. For more information, see steps 1 through 4 in Quick Start — Set Up a FireCluster.
- In Policy Manager, save the configuration to the IP address of the first cluster member.
- Connect your management computer to the second Firebox.
- In Policy Manager, save the configuration to the IP address of the second cluster member.
- Connect the cluster members to each other and to the network switches. For more information, see Connect the FireCluster Hardware.
The cluster forms automatically.
You can use this alternate method to cluster any pair of Firebox or XTM devices but it is particularly useful for XTM 2-Series models with a model upgrade.
