About Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in Data Control
Applies To: WatchGuard Data Control
Files with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) are files that contain information that can be used to identify individuals related to the organization (for example, customers, employees, and suppliers). This information can include different types of data, such as social security numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses.
Data Control inspects and stores the content of all supported file types and generates a PII file inventory. For information on the indexing process, see About Data Control Indexing. For information on how to enable the inventory feature in a settings profile, see Data Control Settings.
Data Control provides multiple tools to monitor the files with PII found on the network and see the data types they contain. On the Data Control dashboard:
- Files with Personal Data — Shows statistics of the number of files with PII found on the network.
- Computers with Personal Data — Shows statistics of the number of computers that contain PII files on the network.
- Files by Personal Data Type — Shows a detailed list of the files with PII found on the network.
File Monitoring
Data Control collects all events related to the creation, modification, and deletion of files with PII, provides visibility into all actions taken, and enables you to detect threats such as data theft, unauthorized access to information, and more.
To see the actions taken on files with PII, you can use the Advanced Reporting Tool. For more information about Data Control in the Advanced Reporting Tool, see About Data Control Advanced Visualization.
For information on how to enable monitoring of the actions taken on files with PII, see Data Control Settings.
