Co-Term DNSWatchGO Licenses
When you co-terminate or co-term licenses, you consolidate or merge your licenses to synchronize renewal dates. This is commonly done to make it easier to manage and renew your licenses.
If you purchased a Passport license bundle and already have a license for one of the bundled products, the co-term calculations are applied to that product only. For more information, see About Passport Licenses.
Each time you activate a per user license key and choose to add users or extend a license, your new license is merged with the selected license and the two licenses are co-termed. Co-termed licenses are merged together and a new expiration date is calculated based on your updated user count and the term length of the license you activated.
If you are a WatchGuard Partner, when you activate a license you can co-term it with an existing license, or activate it as a separate license. We recommend that you co-term your licenses to make renewals easier and to get a better price for each user at renewal.
Renewal Date Calculation for Co-Termed Licenses
When you co-term licenses, they are merged together and a new expiration date is calculated based on your updated user count and the term length of the license you activated. The only exception to this is if you choose to extend your license and reduce your user count. In that case, your user count is reduced immediately and your expiration date is extended by the term of the license you purchased.
Here is the calculation used to determine the expiration date when two licenses are co-termed:
New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (current user count x days until license expires) + (purchased user count x term days) |
final user count |
The co-term calculation is primarily used when you add users or extend your license with more users than you currently have. When you activate a license with the same number of users that your active license has, or with fewer users, your active license is extended by the term of the license you purchased. So if you have 100 users and activate a one year license with 100 users, your expiration date is extended by a year.
The co-term calculation is the same whether you add users or extend your license.
Example 1 — Add Users
You have a license for 20 users that expires in 45 days, and you want to add 10 users on a 1 year license (you purchased a 10 user license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Add Users in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, we can use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current user count = 20
- Days until license expires = 45
- Purchased user count = 10
- Term days for purchased users = 365
- Final user count = 30 users (20 + 10)
New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (20 users x 45 days) + (10 users x 365 days) |
30 users |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 4,550 ÷ 30 = 151.67. We round this value up to 152. So the new expiration date for 30 users is 152 days from the activation date of your new license.
Example 2 — Add Users on a License with a Different Term Length
You have a 1 year license for 10 users that expires in 200 days, and you want to add 50 users on a 3 year license (you purchased a 50 user license with a 3 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Add Users in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, we can use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current user count = 10
- Days until license expires = 200
- Purchased user count = 50
- Term days for purchased users = 365 x 3
- Final user count = 60 (10 + 50)
New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (10 users x 200 days) + (50 users x 365 days x 3) |
60 users |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 56,750 ÷ 60 = 945.83. We round this value up to 946. So the new expiration date for 60 users is 946 days from the activation date of your new license.
Example 3 — Renew a License with Additional Users
You have a license for 100 users that expires in 10 days, and you want to renew your license and also add 50 additional users on a 1 year license (you purchased a 150 user license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, we can use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current user count = 100
- Days until license expires = 10
- Purchased user count = 150
- Term days for purchased users = 365
- Final user count = 150 users (100 renewed + 50 added)
New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 users x 10 days) + (150 users x 365 days) |
150 users |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 55,750 ÷ 150 = 371.67. We round this value up to 372. So the new expiration date for 150 users is 372 days from the activation date of your new license.
Example 4 — Renew a License After Expiration (In Grace Period)
You have a license for 100 users that expired 10 days ago, and you want to renew your license for another year (you purchased a 100 user license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
To calculate the new expiration date for your license, we can use the co-term calculation formula with these values:
- Current user count = 100
- Days until license expires = −10
- Purchased user count = 100
- Term days for purchased users = 365
- Final user count = 100 users
New Expiration Date = | Today's Date + | (100 users x -10 days) + (100 users x 365 days) |
100 users |
When we calculate the value in the formula above, we get 35,500 ÷ 100 = 355. So the new expiration date for your 100 users is 355 days from the activation date of your new license (the term length of your new license minus the 10 days).
Example 5 —Renew a License with Fewer Users
You have a license for 100 users that expires in 10 days, and you want to renew your license for another year with only 80 users (you purchased an 80 user license with a 1 year term length). To do so, you activate your license and select Extend License in the license activation wizard.
When you renew a license with fewer users, your user count is reduced immediately and the expiration date of your license is extended by the term length of the license you purchased and activated. So in this case, your user count is immediately reduced to 80 users and your new expiration date for your 80 users is 1 year from your current expiration date.
When you renew your license with fewer users, you should do so near your expiration date. If you activate the license key before your expiration date, your user count is reduced immediately.
